Onglet de boeuf, les panais rotis, les légumineuses du marché, la truffe, la sauce Vigneronne

Les Cons Servant

Running between November 2 - 16, the 6th edition of MTLàTABLE is in full swing. Take advantage and enjoy a culinary delight at one of the 175 participating restaurants, 18 of which are BYOW.

With so many options to choose from, it was pretty hard to decide which ones to try. Our first stop this year was Les Cons Servant an old staple in the heart of the Plateau with a quirky decor dominated by shelves full of bottles, jars and books.

We found on the table the small jar of complimentary sampling of homemade pickles but we had to ask for the bread and butter which we were served in between the appetizer and main course. No wonder sometimes they say it’s all in the name!

After a quick perusal of the pricey wine list, with few bottles under $50, I decided to order a local beer.

All three of us chose the Tartare de saumon, citron, cibouette, creme fraiche, as appetizer.

Two of us opted for the Onglet de boeuf, panais rotis, legumes du marche, truffe, sauce Vigneronne. We ordered it medium-rare but got it overcooked almost well done. As for the truffles they were obvious just a marketing gimmick as they were conspicuous by their absence in both out portions.

Our companion tried the special of the day, Le lapin, which unfortunately roved as uninspired as the onglet.

Special of the day

We all had the same dessert, Cannoli maison, definitely not remoted related to the Sicilian staple.

Opened ten years ago, but with only David Monette remaining from the original staff, Les Cons Servent seemed to us well past its prime.

Located in the heart of the Plateau, at 5064 Avenue Papineau, Les Cons Servent is surrounded by quaint neighborhood bistros, a few of them BYOW, we usually love to return to: Maison Publique, Pagassus, Petit Resto ... We won't return to this one.

Next stop: Beaver Hall.
